Research from Canada Life Group Insurance shows that 18% of employees have turned up to work whilst feeling mentally unwell. The study found that 19% of employees were more likely to go to work if mentally unwell than physically unwell, 20% would be embarrassed to admit their absence was due to mental health issues and 13% feared their future job prospects would be threatened if they were to call in sick.
When asked what employers should do, 37% of those questioned said that flexible working would make them more comfortable about taking time off for mental health, 34% called for a more positive workplace attitude towards health and wellbeing and 26% wanted less pressure to be 'always on'.
