Everyday racial bias in Britain

The Guardian recently conducted a survey into everyday racial bias in Britain. They surveyed 1000 respondents from minority ethnic backgrounds. The results from the study found that people from minority ethnic backgrounds in Britain were consistently more likely to have faced negative everyday experiences – all frequently associated with racism – than white people. Below are some of the key findings from the survey:

  • 43% of those from minority ethnic backgrounds had been overlooked for promotion in a way that felt unfair in the last 5 years. More than twice the proportion of white people (18%).
  • 57% of minority ethnic respondents felt they had to work harder to succeed in Britain and 40% said they earned less or had worse employment prospects.
  • Two thirds of respondents believe Britain has a problem with racism.
  • Half of the minority ethnic respondents said they believed people sometimes didn’t realise they were treating them differently.

The results from the survey highlight a clear problem in society which urgently needs addressing, especially with regards to employment. Unconscious bias impacts everybody’s judgements, so it is vital that organisations ensure that all of their employees are trained in unconscious bias, so that they know how to prevent it from impacting their decisions, and having a negative effect on other peoples career progression.
