The Government has been urged to abandon its target of three million apprenticeship starts by 2020 following the publication of statistics showing a 59% year on year drop in the number of starts. The dramatic drop coincides with the introduction of the apprenticeship levy in April 2017, and other statistics have revealed that as many as 42% of eligible employers have not signed up for a levy account for their own apprenticeship schemes, raising fears that these employers may simply be writing the levy off as a tax.
