Equality is where all employees have equality of opportunity, and difference doesn’t matter. Equality is a reactive state based on meeting legal requirements and is internally focused on employees.
Equality is enshrined in law around the world. The European Union’s Employment Equality Directive added prohibitions on discrimination in employment on the grounds of religion and belief, age, disability and sexual orientation to existing legislation banning discrimination on the grounds of sex, pregnancy and race. In the UK, the Equality Act 2010 goes further, prohibiting discrimination based on nine Protected Characteristics, adding marriage and civil partnership and gender reassignment.
All employers are required to meet applicable equality legislation in the jurisdictions in which they operate.
